The loss of cycling giant, Jure Robic

Jure Robic died on September 24th at aged 45 when he collided with a truck while training.  I first heard of Jure in a podcast on Radiolab called limits.  This is where I came in contact with RAAM, the Race Across AMerica. Jure has won the race from San Diego to Atlantic City an unprecedented 5 times.  This is easily akin to Lance Armstrong’s 7 wins of the Tour de France. Without big name sponsorship and a six figure salary.

Consider if you will RAAM is not a stage race, there are no rests.  Jure once rode 518.7 miles (834.8 km) in 24 hours, a world record, and an average speed of 34.7 km/hour.

“In race, everything inside me comes out,” he said. “Good, bad, everything. My mind, it begins to do things on its own. I do not like it, but this is the way I must go to win the race.”

Scares me as a new driver – I don’t ever want to know what it feels like to take someone’s life with my car. There needs to be better sharing of the roads so cyclists aren’t picked off. 🙁

While I agree I never want to know what that feels like, in this case it was Jure who was at fault. One of the articles mentions he was on a mountain road with blind corners descending very fast. I highly recommend reading this article on the NYTimes

    The guy was amazing.

Sorry, but it’s not the truth. Jure was my best friends and I can tell you that he was training on a mountain track, not a road,….the man that who killed him was drunk, and he was driving back from the wood where he was gathering some woods…..
it wasn’t Jure’s fault…he was training off-road with his mountainbike. When you go in the wood with your mountainbike do you expect to find a CAR there ?????? I don’t.
