Cyclists are good for Toronto

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

The Star posted an op-ed piece by Joe Fiorito about how cyclists are doing good for the city.  I thought I would calculate my own contribution just for fun.

Using Runkeeper I recorded my commute to work.  This is from my house to the CBC downtown.

Just to make the math easier let’s round the distance to 10km.  I ride to and from work everyday so that is (10km x2)x5.  Which is 100km a week.  Lets assume I can ride for 9 months of the year.  That becomes 400km a month and 3600km/year

The average car uses 8.7 L/100 km which means I save 313.2 litres of gasoline every year.  Which saves me over $340 in fuel costs along every year!

To put this another way… a vehicle which gets 8.7L/100km creates 176.4 lbs in carbon dioxide (CO2) a month (400km).  By riding my bike I save 1,587.6 pounds of carbon dioxide from being released into the air a year.

A tree planted will offset half a tonne of C02 gas emissions per year over it’s life span.  That is like planting three trees a year and that is just my contribution.

According to the City of Toronto, there are over 900,000 adult cyclists in Toronto.  If each of them averages the same as me, then together we are saving 281,880,000 litres of gasoline a year which works out to 3,240,000,000 km at the 8.7/100km rate.

That is a hell of a lot of trees planted, and saves about $307,249,200 in fuel costs.

To put this another way…

A person riding a bicycle at 15 miles per hour (24 km per hour) burns 0.049 calories per pound per minute. So a 175-pound (77-kg) person burns 515 calories in an hour, or about 34 calories per mile (about 21 calories per km).

A gallon of gasoline (about 4 liters) contains about 31,000 calories. If a person could drink gasoline, then a person could ride about 912 miles on a gallon of gas (about 360 km per liter).  A normal car gets about 30 miles per gallon, meaning that cycling is over 30 times more efficient than a car is!

Stick that in your tailpipe and smoke it!

New Year

Friday, January 8th, 2010

I had this lengthy rant about some bad service I got in a restaurant at brunch over the Christmas holiday’s with my family.  It compared it to a great experience we had, also for brunch.  I had photos of the dishes and everything but  then I realized that posting it would be out of step with my new year’s resolution.   My resolution is to be more positive.

I am currently reading Stumbling on Happiness, by Daniel Gilbert.  It is basically about how happiness is a really a state of mind.  He does a great TED presentation here:

So anyway I am resolved to be more positive and try to increase happiness.  My own happiness that is,  I can’t really force anyone else to be happy.  And so, to make myself happy, here are some images.

learned something new

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

I love learning and I just learned something new today I thought I would share.  It’s called Benford’s law and it has to do with mathematics.  Don’t worry, it’s not hard.

benfords

Isn’t that awesome?!!

You’re probably thinking, “nice going dork, that is totally complicated.”  You’re right it is.  I can’t read that equation I just think it looks cool.  But let me put it into plain English and then tell you why it is so cool.

If you took the lengths of all the rivers in Canada and and wrote out the first digit of every length, that is if the river is 356 km long you take “3″  If it is 87 km long you take “8″ and so on these digits would distribute according to universal probability.

Essentially it means that the number 1 will occur more frequently than the number 2.  The number 2 more frequently than the number 3. The number 3 will occur more frequently than the number 4 and so on…

The cool part is, forensic investigators use it when the think some one is cooking the books! Check out this cool video on it and actual data sets. It’s kind of freaky too.

A day without learning is a day wasted.

Don’t waste your effort

shoppersShoppers sent me this email with the headline: “Shoppers Optimum PLUS Bonus Offers – Just for you!

The problem is, it isn’t just for me.  It has nothing to do with me.  I have never bought cosmetics in my fucking life.  Nor is it personalized in any way.  There is no “Hey Dave,” or “Dear Mr. Hamel”

Here is a little tip to anyone who sends this sort of shit out.  Stop it!

Stop wasting your time and mine.  You’re just pissing me off and I will retaliate by forwarding all my spam to you with an auto-filter.

On the other-hand, since you have my personal details, and you have my purchasing records feel free to send me offers I might actually be interested in.

  • Do guys buy cosmetics?  No.
  • Might they be interested in cologne?  Perhaps.
  • Might Dave Hamel, who purchases a new tooth brush every 3-4 weeks religiously be interest in cologne? perhaps.
  • Might Dave Hamel, who purchases a new tooth brush every 3-4 weeks religiously be interest in a toothbrush?
DING DING DING DING! We have a marketing winner!

Now some marketing genius might note that since I already buy tooth brushes they don’t need to give me a discount. Perhaps not Einstein, but sending me toothbrush offers gets me in the store, sending cosmetics offers does not.

One day I will…

  • Have a solo art show
  • Be interviewed on TV
  • Run for public office
  • ride a bike in France
  • walk barefoot in the Sahara
  • remember the good ol’ days
  • wonder where the time went
