The story continues

The CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency) released its report on what happened to Mr. Dziekanski. You can read the report here: http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/media/release-communique/2007/1126-r-eng.html

I think to be honest it raises as many questions as it answers. For example, the electronic records indicate that he passed through primary customs at 4:09 pm, Where the border security officer referred him to secondary examination, because of the language barrier issue.

He makes it to the secondary area, which is on the surveillance footage where he apparently waits by the luggage area. This isn’t that peculiar because people may be waiting for other passengers, waiting for their luggage, or whatever. At 10:40 he attempts to leave the area but is sent back to the secondary immigration area. To facilitate his immigration a border security officer with limited Polish facilitated the process and apparently Mr. Dziekanski’s family was paged at around 11:30pm.

Of course his mother, after being told her son was not there had probably left to go back to Kamloops by that point. I also have the feeling that when they paged his mother they probably didn’t use her name, but assumed she had the same last name as Mr. Dziekanski.

Mr. Dziekanski’s stepfather has contacted CBSA at 7:00 that evening to enquire about Robert, but could not confirm that he was aboard that flight. Why someone should need to confirm if their loved on was on the flight is beyond me. Mr Dziekanski had already made it through the first stage of customs, wasn’t there a record? What kind of security is this?

The report states, “At approximately 02:10 hrs on October 14, 2007, Mr. Dziekanski’s mother called CBSA. Unaware of the status of Mr. Dziekanski, the officer advised her that he had seen her son earlier in the evening and that Mr. Dziekanski had left the CBSA area. ”

You mean to tell me that killings at YVR are so common place that no one talks about it? I find it incredibly hard to believe that someone could come on shift without hearing that police has killed someone only an hour earlier.

Also noted is that between 4 and 7pm the CBSA cannot account fot the where abouts of Mr. Dziekanski because apparently the security camera don’t cover everywhere. Which is also extremely hard to believe in this post 9/11 era.

The report also smells like CBSA is passing the buck onto the RCMP, who are ultimately responsible for the tragedy, however I think there is plenty of blame to go around.
