It gets better – CBC

Monday, November 15th, 2010

I was asked by the lovely and talented May if I would participate in CBC’s “It gets better” video. Of course I said “yes”. The opportunity to tell younger versions of me to hang on wasn’t something I could pass up.

Of course after the fact you think of even more things to say. Namely, “if someone is bullying you, speak to your teachers, parents, or principal. If you are not getting the help you need. Talk to the police and press assault charges and then get a lawyer and sue the school board. No one deserves to get assaulted. And I guarantee they will listen then.”

The Great Escape

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Tropicana created this commercial about bringing some daylight to a town, Inuvik,  inside the arctic circle.   It’s a wonderful idea and while the commercial is interesting, it is really the song “The Great Escape” by Patrick Watson that makes the video.

What I find very interesting is that in the commercial the song is uplifting.  If you watch this video by Alex Produckt and Kathleen Weldon it isn’t uplifting so much anymore and event the lyrics are hard to determine.  Perhaps that is part of the appeal.  I think I would like this as my funeral song.

The Great Escape

Bad day, looking for a way,
home, looking for the great escape.
Gets in his car and drives away,
far from all the things that we are.
Puts on a smile and breathes it in
and breathes it out, he says,
bye bye bye to all of the noise.
Oh, he says, bye bye bye to all of the noise.

Doo doo doo doo doo noo noo
Doo doo doo doo doo noo noo noo noo
Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo doo noo noo noo

Hey child, things are looking down.
That’s okay, you don’t need to win anyways.
Don’t be afraid, just eat up all the gray
and it will fade all away.
Don’t let yourself fall down.

Doo doo doo doo doo noo noo
Doo doo doo doo doo noo noo noo noo
Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo doo noo noo noo

Bad day, looking for the great escape.
He says, bad day, looking for the great escape.
On a bad day, looking for the great escape,
the great escape.

New Year

Friday, January 8th, 2010

I had this lengthy rant about some bad service I got in a restaurant at brunch over the Christmas holiday’s with my family.  It compared it to a great experience we had, also for brunch.  I had photos of the dishes and everything but  then I realized that posting it would be out of step with my new year’s resolution.   My resolution is to be more positive.

I am currently reading Stumbling on Happiness, by Daniel Gilbert.  It is basically about how happiness is a really a state of mind.  He does a great TED presentation here:

So anyway I am resolved to be more positive and try to increase happiness.  My own happiness that is,  I can’t really force anyone else to be happy.  And so, to make myself happy, here are some images.
