Awhile back Chris Berry and I had a conversation about the state of analytics and tracking and where the industry is going.  We were both concerned that analysts were going to screw themselves by tracking information they had no business to. And that it was just a matter of time before someone dropped the ball….Well, the ball has dropped.

Facebook just admitted they have been tracking users even after they log out of the site.

Violating personal privacy is nothing new to Facebook.  Heck, their entire business model is based off of selling your personal information which is why I got off of it years ago.

In comparison, the breech of Sony was a Fukushima, it was a disaster for the corporation but was caused by an outside force.  One could argue they should have been prepared but if the hackers hadn’t attacked them it would not have been an issue.

In the case of Facebook, it’s a Chernobyl.  It is violation of privacy caused by the companies own actions (which it calls a glitch). In an effort to cover it’s ass it has recently set up its own Political Action Committee, an American term for a lobbying outfit to get its views heard on Capitol Hill.

So far this year it has already spent £352,000 ($550,774) on lobbying, already ahead of last year’s total of £224,000.

Scumbags….

Money it made by selling its customer’s personal information to advertisers.

I captured this photo before I left for Japan.  I think you would be hard-pressed to convince anyone with a lick of sense that Earth Hour is something other than a big advertising exercise. Hypocritical to say the least.

Problem with Earth Hour

Why do we have an Earth hour? The earth is going to be here for billions of years, long after we are all gone.  I guarantee it.  If we pollute the world, to the point of no return and all human life ceases to exist, the planet will continue until the sun grows into a red giant star and consumes it.

Earth hour is, for all intents and purposes, totally selfish.   It pretends to be altruistic, but in reality its not. It’s slacktivism assuaging the guilt the West has for being “have” nations while providing a big marketing platform for the WWF and it’s sponsors.

Toronto reported a whopping 15.15% drop in power usage during the last Earth day, but the rest of Ontario reported only a 6% drop.  Why do you think that is?   One possible reason for the vast difference is the fact that the office buildings in downtown Toronto turned off their lights.  That alone must save millions of watts of energy every night and thousands of bird’s lives. Why the city doesn’t enforce this every night is beyond me personally I would make it mandatory.  Of course, this is the same city that allows stores to keep their doors open in the Summer while blasting air conditioning.

Vancouver, the supposed granola eating capital of the country recorded only a 1.1% drop in energy usage.  Are we to believe that the people in Vancouver care less about the environment than the people in Toronto?   Perhaps the reason Toronto seems to respond so much better to the campaign was that one of the official sponsors of Earth hour is the Toronto Star, so there was local promotion in the newspaper.  Funny, I wonder how much energy it takes to produce a single newspaper? Perhaps we should save the environment by only getting our news online.

Leo Burnett, the advertising agency who developed the whole idea has an office in Toronto, so perhaps that helped promotion.  Leo Burnett also has a client roster that includes companies like McDonald’s and Nike.  How environmentally concerned can you be when one of your clients cuts down rain forests to inject cheap cattle and the other employs child labour? Honestly the whole thing smacks of hypocrisy.

To raise awareness for Earth Hour 2009 during the week leading up to it, Arla Foods coloured their Swedish milk cartons black-grey, as distinct from the typical white-green. Question: How much more ink do you think printing the entire thing in black takes?  Answer: Who cares it’s good advertising!

I’m not the only one who takes issue with the whole idea of Earth Hour feel good slacktivism.

The Ayn Rand Institute wrote, “Participants spend an enjoyable sixty minutes in the dark, safe in the knowledge that the life-saving benefits of industrial civilization are just a light switch away… Forget one measly hour with just the lights off. How about Earth Month… Try spending a month shivering in the dark without heating, electricity, refrigeration; without power plants or generators; without any of the labor-saving, time-saving, and therefore life-saving products that industrial energy makes possible.”

The truth is, Earth Hour is a big advertising circle jerk.  Sponsors get their logos plastered all over town (and get to write it off as tax-reducing donations) and the WWF gets more exposure and more dollars in their coffers.

So this Earth Hour, rather than sitting in the dark with the lights off feeling smug, why don’t you do something that really matters like make a donation to KIVA.

Privacy and DRM

Personal information should be protected under copyrights as well as privacy laws.  The government of Canada is about to release a new bill which will see Canada follow the US with Digital Rights Management.  I would like that to extend to my personal information I created everything about me on facebook.  I would like corporations like Facebook and Youtube and others to be forced to treat my personal information like I will be forced to treat music, movies and software.

If I buy a copy of Adobe Photoshop I cannot copy it and resell it, I cannot share it with other, and I don’t own it.  I think the same restrictions should be applied to Facebook.  Facebook “rents” my information which they are free to use on their site to advertise to me. But while they can use it, but they cannot sell it (which they are), cannot share it (which they are) and cannot copy it (which they are).

What’s good for the goose is good for the gander

Banksy in Toronto

I am a huge fan of Banksy.  I think his work is thought provoking and relevant to modern times.  I am a little unsure of his recent works however.  He is releasing a new movie called exit through the gift shop.

What concerns me is the recent spat of work in Toronto, I noticed one near the T&T by the waterfront on Cherry Street and at first I was like, “WTF?”  but now I see samples everywhere and I can’t help but wonder, are they originals or just a clever marketing ploy.  If they are a marketing ploy then it would be totally fitting given the subject matters of Banksy’s work, but a little disappointing since I would like to imagine him sneaking around T.O. making his mark.

The problem is, it isn’t just for me.  It has nothing to do with me.  I have never bought cosmetics in my fucking life.  Nor is it personalized in any way.  There is no “Hey Dave,” or “Dear Mr. Hamel”

Here is a little tip to anyone who sends this sort of shit out.  Stop it!

Stop wasting your time and mine.  You’re just pissing me off and I will retaliate by forwarding all my spam to you with an auto-filter.

On the other-hand, since you have my personal details, and you have my purchasing records feel free to send me offers I might actually be interested in.

  • Do guys buy cosmetics?  No.
  • Might they be interested in cologne?  Perhaps.
  • Might Dave Hamel, who purchases a new tooth brush every 3-4 weeks religiously be interest in cologne? perhaps.
  • Might Dave Hamel, who purchases a new tooth brush every 3-4 weeks religiously be interest in a toothbrush?
    DING DING DING DING! We have a marketing winner!

Now some marketing genius might note that since I already buy tooth brushes they don’t need to give me a discount. Perhaps not Einstein, but sending me toothbrush offers gets me in the store, sending cosmetics offers does not.
