The right to die

Thursday, April 19th, 2012

I am a big fan of Terry Pratchett, he is a brilliant author and unfortunately ill with alzheimer’s.  Mr. Pratchett is fighting for the right to die at a time of his own choosing. Before his mind has deteriorated to the point where he can no longer think for himself, he would like to choose when he goes.  What is amazing in this video are the people.  We meet Andrew Colgan, who had MS and chose to die,  and this couple who allow Mr. Pratchett to accompany them as the husband, Peter Smedley commits suicide with the help of a Swiss organization Dignitas.  Peter accepts his demise with grace and dignity. We should all be so brave.

Another Butcher’s update

Saturday, January 28th, 2012

It’s been a year or so since this whole Butcher’s fiasco started.  I was one of the lucky ones, getting my money back.  It was probably because I work for the CBC (which I made a point of mentioning) and CBC had already done an expose on the whole online-coupon thing and interviewed Marlon at the Butchers as well.

The Butchers is gone, and has been replaced by Marlon’s meats. And the website states in it’s FAQ section that they will honor coupons until Labor Day weekend 2012.  They are asking voucher holders to submit their vouchers to buytopia and other web coupon site who will “schedule it and arrange collection or delivery”

Needless to say Buytopia and the like are not going to do that.  They are not in the product scheduling and delivery business and I am sure their lawyers will argue that it is Marlon’s responsibility to honor the agreements.

Several commentors on the blog have mentioned that the vouchers are no longer being honored and apparently legal action has begun.

If you are a voucher holder I would recommend you try to get other people together and place a class action suit against the parties involved. There is a lot of money on the table and if Buytopia or the Butcher’s win, they are going to walk away with it.  Minus whatever the lawyers take and I don’t think anyone bought coupons to pay lawyers.

Top 6 reasons to micro-loan

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

I am a big believer in micro-loans.  I have done a lot of reading about them and actively participate in loaning money. In celebration of my 100th micro-loan I thought I would share my top five reasons to participate.

  1. It’s not charity. I know this seems like an odd statement but I firmly believe that charity is problematic.  First off, a huge percentage of foreign aid is siphoned off by corruption.  It is pretty easy for a warlord or gang of thugs with guns to seize any funds or products being delivered into a country. No one wants to steal a loan the loan is an agreement and there are little tangible assets to take.  Secondly with a lot of charities the people administering the aid are not the people who need the help.  Meaning they are imposing their values and views to create a solution rather than providing the necessary resources for the people affected to find a solution. Micro-loans let the people who have the issue decide on the solution.
  2. It makes you a better person. There is a certain feeling that comes from knowing you have given someone a leg up that is crucial to personal development.  Children should know what it feels like to help someone who cannot do anything for them, and to share without expecting something in return.  This is because there is a hierarchy of human needs. People need consistency and safety, paradoxically they need change and variation, they need to be needed and they need to contribute.  The need to contribute helps make you achieve self-actualization.Samuel Johnson wrote, “The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good.”  I would like to be measured as a good person.
  3. You can afford it. Twenty five dollars is nothing, NOTHING for someone in Canada. Don’t give me some sob story about your rent or how you only make minimum wage. Saving a dollar a day will allow you to make a loan every month and reward yourself with a latte with the change left over.  We tend to overestimate the effort required to make a change when we look at the whole change, but underestimate the value of small incremental changes.I can’t save the world.  But I can help someone.  They in turn will make a contribution and so on.  My loan might help a farmer buy a goat, which will lead to milk for his children, which will improve their health.  Because they are healthy they learn better at school.  Because they learn better they might get a scholarship.  They might use that scholarship to become a doctor and so on…  Plus you are not throwing the money away.
  4. It’s a savings plan. You are LOANING the money, not giving it away.  I have almost a thousand dollars floating around in various states in KIVA.  If I wanted I could wait a year for all the money to be paid back and take it out of the service.  While I may not make any interest on it, my bank doesn’t really pay interest either.  In fact, my bank is charging me a service fee to handle my money so this is even better.
  5. You make the world a safer place. Colin Powell, Former US Secretary of state said “[We] cannot win the war on terrorism unless we confront the social and political roots of poverty.”  With all the money the US and Canadian governments are spending on security they could have really fought the good fight against poverty.I have a little rule:  Never fuck with someone who has nothing to lose. It might sound a little glib but essentially it is the poor and dissolute who become suicide bombers, not people with farms and livestock, families and businesses. If we want to make the world a safer place we need to give the other guys something to lose.
  6. What goes around, comes around. It doesn’t get simpler than that.

The Butchers scams Toronto?

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

Back in April, I, like apparently the rest of Toronto bought vouchers for a butcher shop on Yonge street aptly named “The Butchers”.  At first I was wary it was a scam, I normally have a good nose for this stuff, but after checking out their website I thought, “what the hell”. It was an incredible deal and since I had a year to redeem the voucher it shouldn’t be an issue.

I read the fine print on the voucher all of which seemed reasonable.

I emailed them to ask how exactly I go about getting my order since I don’t live anywhere near Yonge and Lawrence.

Hello,
I am a first time buyer.  I purchased the buytopia voucher at a friends suggestion and I was wondering what the procedure is to order and have it delivered.  Do I simply select $400 worth of meat and pass along my voucher?
Thanks!
Dave

I received an email the next day, which I took as a good sign, but the “no deliveries for two weeks should have been a warning sign.

Hi Dave,
thanks for the email. Yes you just buy $400 worth of meat. If you are looking for a delivery the deliveries are as follows: Wednesday & Thursday GTA core/ Friday Markham and Scarborough/ Saturday Thornhill, Richmond Hill, North York/ Sunday Mississauga, Brampton, and Etobicoke. Please give us 5 days before your order date.
If you would like to place an order you would need to fill out the following in this format.
Date of preference of delivery or pick up:
Name:
Tel #:
Full Address:
Major intersection:
Voucher Company:
Voucher #:
As of right now we are booked for deliveries for 2 weeks.
I am thrilled to hear that your friends have suggested The Butchers. I hope you enjoy your meats and I thank you for your business.
Saruka Para

But being the adventurous sort I hiked off to The butchers in search of my $400 worth of meat.  When I arrived I was informed that vouchers would not be honoured during Easter.  Which is odd because the voucher states “Open Passover/Easter weekends for Buytopia customers.” Not voucher holders, not customers but specifically Buytopia voucher holders like me.

I left, a little pissed off about not being able to use my voucher but still willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.  The shop clearly wasn’t ready for the volume of people and I didn’t really need the meat then anyway.

After a couple of weeks I went in again, this time the shop-keeper informed me that vouchers would not be honoured on the weekends.  However, I didn’t want to come away empty handed again so I bought some ground beef.  The shop was so busy all it had left was chicken wings, livers, and some roasts which were way to big for me.  The ground beef was literally being sold as it was grinding.

After going home I realized that the only way to get my order filled was to send it in for delivery or pick-up which I did.  I ordered about $300 worth of meat.  After two weeks I hadn’t heard anything from them so I sent a follow up email to Saruka to see if they received my order.  I got an auto-reply:

Unfortunately email orders for delivery and pick up are booked until June 23rd; therefore we are no longer taking orders until after this date. Please feel free to come by The Butchers and select your desired items. This can be done during our voucher hours. We are open from Tuesday to Friday 10am-11:30am and 1am to 6pm. If you wish to place your online order, please resubmit your order to thebutchers2636@yahoo.com after June 23rd. An email response will be sent to your account withing 10 business days.

For any inquiry regarding our products and service please email butchersinquiry@yahoo.ca

We are very sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

So I wasn’t able to get my order by going in, and couldn’t get them to take my order online.  I started doing some searches online to see if this was truly a scam or not.

First up was Yelp which had loads of people complaining about the quality and the inability to redeem coupons.  That lead me to other sites.  One blogger, Kate Raynes-Goldie wrote

A rep at Webpiggy confirmed that by March, they had likely sold $1.5 million worth of coupons – a seemingly impossible amount of product for a small business to honour. The Webpiggy rep also told me that the owners of the Butchers are opening a fish store across the street, which suggests that all this group couponing is not an effort to get new customers (they’re doing a horrible job if that’s their goal), rather it is fundraising effort for their new business venture at the expense of customers who are not having their side of the bargain held up.

She also linked to an advert that Buytopia and the Butchers published in the Toronto metro. Another blogger noted that the actual amount sold is closer to $2.6 million dollars!  And they analysed the quality of the meat, which was suspect.  That’s when I went back to their website to see this:

Please note we have changed our store hours. These hours are effective beginningThursday June 2nd. Until this time we will NOT be honouring vouchers. Please read below to understand why we are unable to honour vouchers this week.

Due to the overwhelming success of our vouchers we have encountered numerous issues in our store with the behaviour of voucher customers. Our staff have been verbally and physically abused. We have met with police to ensure this behaviour does not continue. Because of this we will have police presence at the store beginning next Thursday June 2nd. We are also in the process of installing surveillance cameras for the security of our staff. We are delaying accepting vouchers until security at the store is in place.

Please note if abuse on our staff continues we will not honor vouchers. We are doing our best to satisfy everyone however we can’t guarantee stock and abusing our staff will not resolve the issue. We ask for your patience during this time.

Our store will be closed to voucher holders until Thursday June 2nd to address these issues.

New Hours Effective Thursday June 2nd
Tues-Sat: 6:30pm-9:30pm

Voucher Coupons will not be honored at any other time. NO EXCEPTIONS

Note the underlined part [my emphasis].  I can foretell what will happen; they will claim that their staff have been abused and then won’t honour any of the vouchers.  Now perhaps people have been abusive to their staff, but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to do the mathematics.  If you normally sell a thousand dollars worth of meat a day, and you sell vouchers with a 4:1 ratio you had better assume you will sell somewhere around $4000 worth of meat a day.  With 2.6 million worth of coupons on the market you will need 8 million dollars worth of meat!

Toronto life mentioned that Buytopia’s forum was shut down it got so many complaints about the deal.  I imagine they are pretty pissed too. I did see on their website:

As a buyer of a Voucher on Buytopia.ca, you are expected to follow the refund policy rules stipulated under the Deal’s refund information. As a Buyer, you are also entitled to a 30-day buyer remorse period, and have the right to cancel a Voucher and request a refund from buytopia.ca for which you have paid over $50 CAD. We will act in accordance with the Consumer Protection Act, 2002 found here - http://www.sse.gov.on.ca/mcs/en/Pages/Your_Consumer_Rights.aspx.

I emailed and phoned Buytopia to get a refund, but so far no reply.  Perhaps they’re in on the scam too.  I will give Buytopia a week to respond then I am going to submit complaints to BBB, and the City of Toronto (who does the licensing).

Fuck coupon sites and the like.  My spidey web senses were tingling and I ignored them. Thanks Butchers, lesson learned!

Sometimes even bullies have a soft spot

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

It’s no secret to anyone who knows me that I love the Internet.  I love it way more than I could ever love another medium like radio or TV.  I also love cats(and have two) so it might be some sort of loner connection between people who surf the web and the normally solitary feline, I don’t know but there is a connection there.

The downside of the Internet however is that for the most part I am jaded and no longer shocked.  I have seen things from the absurd, to the sublime, to the deeply disturbing.  One of the disturbing things I came across recently is this video of a middle-aged woman putting a cat in a garbage bin.  It almost looks like a Monty Python skit except the camera information in the bottom left  which shows it is actually closed circuit television.  Which is common in the UK. That and the fact that the cat was in there for 15 hours!

The story isn’t all doom and gloom.  First off, the cat is okay – thankfully.  Secondly, the woman, Mary Bale has been apprehended and is safe.  I write “safe” because she has received countless death threats.   You see, the internet loves cats.

And I mean it FUCKING LOVES CATS. Especially 4chan.

If you haven’t heard of 4chan I won’t explain it, I would be breaking the first two rules. What you should know is that 4chan is the best and worst of humanity at it’s most uncensored. 4chan is the home of anonymous “/b/tards” and they can be ruthless.

Anonymous however, has a soft spot for cats.  Awhile back a kid named Kenny Glenn posted a video of himself abusing a cat. I will spare you the details, you can go find them yourself, but suffice to say this little fuck is a Jeffery Dahmer in the making.

Anonymous got wind of it and using some sleuthing had the kid identified and arrested within 48 hours. After his parents, who were big shots in the small town of Lawton had most of the news hushed up, Anon went into overdrive:

Should he register an account with any service they will be there to “out” his past actions. Kenny Glenn, and all those around him, will be haunted by his cruelty for a long time by any means the community can muster. Hate mail, prank phone calls, and possibly even visits in person are not out of the question.

One thing is for sure. Dusty will be avenged.

~encyclopedia dramatica

Just like Kenny, Anon helped identify Mary. And just like Kenny, Mary’s life on the internet is over. You see, the internet never forgets, and Anon never forgives.

Anonymous has also helped identify the four kids in Camrose who microwaved their neighbor’s cat to death and then wrote on the walls “Nice cat, look in the microwave.”  You see, Anon doesn’t really care for the legal system. They don’t give a shit that you can’t publish the names of minors in Canada. Once judgement has been pronounced they will mercilessly go after someone.  Just ask Jessi Slaughter.

The owners of the cat, Stephanie and Daryll Mann, are asking people to not hurt Ms Bale. But really, her life is over.  No matter where she goes, Ms Bale will have to carry the shame and responsibility of what she did with her for the rest of her life. I imagine people in her neighborhood and friends must be looking at her like “WTF?!!”

So the moral of the story kids is for the love of God, be nice to cats, because you never know if Anonymous is watching.
